discussing wellness + matters of the heart in schools.

Adolescents, as well as the adults who love and work with them,  experience an incredible amount of stress throughout their daily lives. Teens and adults alike are often unable to identify the subtle, yet substantial effects of these stresses, which can impact their functioning in a variety of ways. For adolescents, this can include decision making, attendance in school, academic performance , interpersonal skills communication. Stressful conditions—like high-stakes testing or challenging students—can lead teachers to feel discouraged, burned out, and ready to quit. Studies have shown that practicing mindfulness, even for just a few weeks, can bring a variety of physical, psychological, and social benefits. Understanding the effects of trauma, practicing mindfulness, and learning effective self-care tools can assist in regulating the nervous system and returning the brain to a healthier state that is hardwired to help individuals manage stress more effectively throughout their lives. As an educator with 20 years of teaching experience, it is my desire to assist schools by offering wellness support and creating a more mindful environment to improve the well-being of all members of the school community.
